FMC partners Funaab to establish diabetic center

The Federal Medical Center, Idi-Aba, Abeokuta, has expressed readiness to partner with the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta, on the establishment of a diabetic center in Ogun State.

The Medical Director, FMC, Prof. Adewale Musa-Olomu, disclosed this in Abeokuta, when the Vice Chancellor of FUNAAB, Prof. Felix Kolawole-Salako, visited the hospital.

The purpose of the visit was to interact with the management of the university on how to upgrade the FMC to the Federal University of Medicine and Medical Sciences.

Musa-Olomu, however, said that the hospital would assist the university in operating the diabetic center by upgrading its radiological services and laboratories to make sure that medical tests and research on diabetes were carried out at the hospital.

The medical director, therefore, called on the members of the public to refer any patient suffering from critical liver-related disease to the hospital, disclosing that the management was set to procure a liver equipment for the treatment of such a disease.

He said, “We are upgrading our radiological services and the latest equipment, by next week, will be installed as well as the laboratories. So, there is no investigation that you want to do in this hospital that you can’t do.

“Liver is a major organ in the body, it’s a kitchen, it’s everything and once the liver is diseased, the person is dying. So, we are going to acquire that equipment and we have been interacting with the organisation that will bring that equipment.”

The FUNAAB VC, who said that former President Olusegun Obasanjo had asked him to establish the diabetic center in the university, stressed that the center would have a combination of herbal and orthodox treatment for the disease.

He said, “Recently, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo came to us and was talking about a diabetic center that is going to be a combination of herbal medicine and orthodox medicine.

“So, we will focus on the herbal side. Of course, we know Nigerians have made advances in that. When you go to Ife, Nsukka and Ibadan, at least, I know pharmacy departments in those institutions in terms of herbal medicine and many medical doctors, have made their marks through herbal
medicine.”
