Group tackles FGM, cancer in Lagos Community

As part of the efforts to end Female Genital Mutilation in Nigerian society, a Non-Governmental Organization, His Marvelous Grace Support Foundation had embarked on a campaign to discourage the trend.
The campaign which was held in the Ikorodu area of Lagos was majorly targeted at the youths in Ikorodu in commemoration of Zero tolerance for Female Genital Mutilation day.
Speaking on the development, the founder of the foundation, Mrs Oluwadamisi Tayo-Ladega, said the mission was to ensure that the practice is put to an end in our immediate society.  “The HMGSF team met with the youths in Ikorodu, to teach the dangers of female circumcision and how it affects the girl child. FGM is a violation of the Sexual and Reproductive health and rights of girls and should not be practised in our society”.
Ladega also called on the government on the need to enact a law that will help to nip the act in the bud”.
Meanwhile, in commemoration of the World Cancer Day, the NGO had also embarked on sensitization to help resident live lives that is free of the crisis.
“To commemorate the world cancer day on 4th February, 2020, which was tagged “I am, and I will” His Marvelous Grace Support Foundation team had a rally in Ikorodu to create awareness on prostate, cervical, breast, liver and Childhood cancer. This was done to enlighten the people of Ikorodu about the signs, symptoms, causes and prevention of cancer, as well as to let them know that early detection and regular screening saves life”’ Tayo-Ladega also added.
The residents of Ikorodu, while appreciating the initiatives, said the move by the NGO would help them to eschew the act.
They also called for more of the sensitization in other parts of the community where they said such traditional practices are embraced.
The highlight of the event includes a short drama in the line of the FGM stoppage in the society.
