Gunmen unleash terror on Ebonyi residents for flouting sit-at-home order

BY TIMOTHY AGBOR

Unspecified number of residents of Ishieke market in Abakaliki, Ebonyi State capital has been feared killed while some properties destroyed after some gunmen attacked the area.

The gunmen, adorned in red coloured regalia and armed to the teeth, attacked the market in broad daylight, shooting everyone on sight and setting some motorcycles and tricycles ablaze.

Armed with AK-47 rifles, the dare devil men of the underworld were heard in a viral video sighted by The Point on Tuesday condemning people for flouting an illegal sit-at-home order in the state imposed by a factional Indigenous People of Biafra.

In the video, the gunmen shot sporadically and gunned down two motorcycle operators and some pedestrians as other residents scampered to safety.

Some road users left their vehicles and motorcycles as the gunmen, numbering about seven, as could be seen in the video, were opening fire on the innocent citizens.

One of the attackers who were making a video record of the shooting was saying that there wouldn’t be movement in the state until the detained IPOB leader, Nnamdi Kanu is released.

“It’s happening live directly, today, 4th July, 2023. It’s in Ebonyi, Abakaliki at Ishieke market. You can see the Keke burning. Burn everything; we don’t want anything to remain. Destroy them, sit-at-home; Nnamdi Kanu must be released. No Nnamdi Kanu, no peace. Destroy them, Nnamdi Kanu must be released at all cost,” one of the gunmen was saying amid the shooting and chaos.

The masked gunmen arrived in the environment in a brown colour Sienna bus and were running after traders and road users to maim them.

After unleashing terror for about five minutes, they zoomed off without any confrontation by any security agents.
