The Nigerian Correctional Service has set up a special security team to fortify Custodial centres across the country.

This was indicated in a statement issued by the Public Relations Officer of the Service, Francis Enobore, on Sunday in Abuja.

The statement quoted Controller General, Haliru Nababa, as saying that a meeting centered on strengthening intelligence gathering and sharing among security operatives was held to nip attacks in the bud.

The meeting was held in concert with the Commandant General of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, Abubakar Audi; and the acting Comptroller General of the Nigeria Immigration Service, Idris Jere.

The statement read that the Minister of Interior, Rauf Aregbesola, on December 9 during the ministerial retreat held in Ilorin, Kwara State, directed security agencies under the Ministry of Interior to collaborate on intelligence gathering, sharing and physical confrontation with jail attackers.

The statement read that state Commandants of the Service would gear up for the tasks, which would include protecting custodial centres being among critical national infrastructures.

It stressed the importance of organising a common front to challenge the misguided activities of armed criminals and expressed confidence that they would be conquered in no distant time.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that Custodial Centres in Nigeria have since October 2020, witnessed six attacks in different parts of the country.
