Man jailed seven years for pouring acid on lawyer

A High Court of Justice, Abakaliki Ebonyi State capital, has convicted a man who poured acid on a lawyer.

The High Court on December 15, 2021, convicted Njoku Shedrack who poured acid/corrosive substances on Caleb Chukwunonso- Onwe , a member of Abakaliki Branch of the Nigerian Bar Association and sentenced him to seven years imprisonment without an option of fine.

Delivering the judgement in suit marked HAB/151C/2020- State verses Njoku Shedrack, the court presided over by Justice Iheanacho Chima held that the prosecution proved beyond reasonable doubts that it was the defendant who poured acid on the lawyer on October 1, 2019 without any justification and accordingly convicted him for the offence of assault occasioning harm.

Reacting to the judgement, the prosecution counsel, J.U Chukwu, Assistant Chief State Counsel, thanked the court for doing justice in the matter.

Similarly, the defendant’s counsel, Odiegwu Ibekwe, thanked the court for delivering a well-considered judgement, stating that courts should always ensure that justice is done in all circumstances.
