Man hacks brother to death over minor disagreement

The Police in Ebonyi State have arraigned a 29-year-old man, Maduka Nwankwegu, before a Magistrate’s Court, sitting in Abakaliki, the state capital, for allegedly hitting his elder brother with bamboo stick and caused his death. Maduka is standing trial in a suit marked, “MAB/116c/2023”, for allegedly causing the death of his brother, identified as Agenu Nwankwegu, over a minor disagreement.

The defendant allegedly hit the deceased with a bamboo stick on his head on January 30, 2023, at Ndiezeoke Inyimagu, Izzi Local Government Area of the state. During arraignment, the plea of the defendant who had no legal representation, could not be taken because of the gravity of the alleged offence.

The charge read, “That you Maduka Nwankwegu, aged 29 years, male, on the 30th day of January 2023, at Ndiezeoke Inyimagu, Izzi Local Government Area, within the jurisdiction of this honourable court, did unlawfully cause the death of one Agenu Nwankwegu by hitting him with bamboo stick on his head and thereby committed an offence punishable under Section 319(1) of the Criminal Code, Cap 33, Volume1, Laws of Ebonyi State of Nigeria, 2009.”

The magistrate, Lynda Ogodo, ordered the remand of the defendant at the Nigeria Correctional Centre, Abakaliki. Ogbodo ordered the police prosecutor, Ezeh Chinagorom, to transfer all documents, evidences, including the original case file to the Department of Public Prosecution were covered by the insurance policy for legal advice.
