Ogun community protests two-year electricity supply disconnection

…sends SOS to Gov Amosun, alleges Reps member behind their ordeal

Score of residents of Ololo Odosenlu community in Ijebu North Local Government Area of Ogun State have protested the disconnection of electricity supply to the area in the past two years by the Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company.
The angry residents, who defied Tuesday’s heavy downpour, stormed the Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta, Governor’s Office with placards to register their displeasure with IBEDC and to seek the intervention of Governor Ibikunle Amosun in the matter.
Displaying placards with various inscriptions such as “We need light for our social and economic life,” “Say no to darkness,” “Life is miserable in darkness,” “We want our rights after two years of no power supply,” “All activities of our community have been paralysed,” and “Lack of electricity is adversely affecting our economic and social lives,” the residents accused IBEDC of refusing to energise the transformer procured by the community and installed since November 2017.
The protesting residents led by the Baale of the community, Adetola Hassan, said that inspite of the contribution of the sum of N2, 150,000 towards the installation of the transformer, some opposition politicians in the area had continued to make it impossible for the transformer to be energized for the supply of electricity to the area.
A save-our-soul letter jointly signed on behalf of the community by the Baale, Hassan; the Secretary, Olatunde Kayode; Youth President, Olawale Oladele and the Public Relations Officer, Hassan Ajibola, and delivered to the Governor’s Office, Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta, during the protest read, “We, the elders and youths of Ololo Odosenlu community humbly write to formally inform you that since the 29th day of January 2016, there has been no power supply to the whole community. Though we verbally reported the incident to Ago-Iwoye, Ijebu Ode, Abeokuta and Ibadan offices of the IBEDC, there has been no response from the Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company.
“The community now took a step by contributing funds towards the installation of a 1 No 500KVA 33/0 415KV transformer that was donated by your Excellency in 2012 to the community to enhance the development of the community, which the Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company has refused to install for us. We have installed the transformer since November 2017 through the efforts of our House of Assembly representative in the person of Hon. Dare Kadiri (Maba), some individual donations and community contribution.
“We have written to the Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC) at Ijebu Ode, Abeokuta and Ibadan, respectively, for the connection of the light, but all efforts are now in vain. Your Excellency sir, we need your intervention in rescuing us from this total darkness. All the activities of the community have been paralysed, thereby affecting adversely the economic activities and the social lives of the people of a community highly populated by students and workers of Olabisi Onabanjo University (formerly Ogun State University), Ago-Iwoye, apart from the teeming population of indigenes of the community.”
The SOS letter to the governor further read, “The community and Hon Dare Kadiri (Maba) has generously donated the sum of two million, one hundred and fifty thousand Naira only for the installation of the transformer, but all our efforts have been frustrated by forces who are against the interest of the current administration. From our investigation, we discovered that Hon Mojeed Adekoya (Attacker) of the Federal House of Representatives representing our constituency has been working behind the scene to frustrate our efforts. We believe we are suffering because we voted totally for the APC in the last elections, which had never happened before. We hereby restate our total support for your administration.
“We’ll be very grateful if our humble request is granted because we believe in your active administration.”
