Police dock man for assault, rescuing armed robbery suspect from custody

A 37-year-old-man, Samson Omisade, has been arrested and dragged before a Senior Magistrate’s Court sitting in Osogbo, the Osun State capital, by the police for allegedly escaping from custody and aiding the escape of another suspect.

The defendant was also accused of assaulting four persons with dangerous weapons around noon at Ara-Joshua village, near Ile-Ife, on September 19, 2022.

Police prosecutor, Inspector Kayode Adeoye, informed the court that the defendant committed the offence alongside others who were at large.

He explained that the victims, namely Oyedokun Abiodun, Ogundare Tunde, Odewole Adepoju and Olabiyi Segun, were macheted on their heads on the same day, at the same time and place.

He added that one Solomon Ige, otherwise known as Solo, who was arrested in a case of armed robbery by the police, was freed from the custody by the defendant.

The charge brought against him read that “You, Omisade Samson and others now at large, on the 19th of September, 2022, at about 12pm, at Ara-Joshua via Ile-Ife, Osun State, did conspire among yourselves to commit felony to wit: assault occasioning harm.

“You (defendant), at the same time, place and in the aforementioned Magisterial District, did unlawfully assault Oyedokun Abiodun, Ogundare Tunde, Odewole Adepoju and Olabiyi Segun by inflicting machete cuts on their heads, which caused them harm.

“You did unlawfully rescue one Solomon Ige, a.k.a Solo, who was arrested in a case of armed robbery, from lawful custody.”

Samson pleaded not guilty to the allegations. His counsel, Tunde Adedokun, prayed the court to grant his client bail in liberal terms, assuring the court that reliable people would be presented as sureties.

Ruling on the application, Senior Magistrate A. Adeyeba granted the defendant bail in the sum of N1 million with two sureties in the same amount.

He said that the sureties must be the defendant’s siblings, adding that they should present an affidavit of means and three passport size photographs to court.

The matter was adjourned till December 6 for mention.
