Woman collapses after receiving punches from suspected jewelry thief

A 35-year-old-man, David Oyelakin, has been arraigned before a Magistrate’s Court sitting in Osogbo, for allegedly assaulting a woman whom he reportedly robbed.

According to the police, Oyelakin sneaked into the residence of one Bunmi Oladimeji at Ayekale area in Osogbo at night and carted away jewellery worth N321, 000.

It was learnt that during the raid, Oyelakin pounced on the woman who owns the jewelries for attempting to stop him from bolting away and rained punches on her till she lost consciousness.

The defendant was said to have been apprehended by residents who chased him after he attempted to run away from the neighbourhood.

Police prosecutor, Inspector Kayode Adeoye, informed the court that the defendant committed the offence on October 31, 2022 at about 10pm, adding that he caused the woman eye injury.

The charges against the defendant read that “Oyelakin David on the 31st of October, 2022, at about 10pm, at Ayekale area, Osogbo, Osun State, did with intent to kill, unlawfully hit one Bunmi Oladimeji with fist blows on her head and her face severally until she became unconscious (fainted) and thereby committed an offence contrary to and punishable under Section 320 of the Criminal Code, Cap 34, Volume II, Laws of Osun State of Nigeria, 2002.

“You, Oyelakin David, did unlawfully assault one Bunmi Oladimeji by hitting her with fist blows on her head and face which caused her harm on her left eye and thereby committed an offence contrary to and punishable under Section 355 of the Criminal Code, Cap 34, Volume II Laws of Osun State.

“You did with intent to intimidate or annoy, continue to threaten to kill one Bunmi Oladimeji after you have inflicted severe injuries on her face and thereby committed an offence contrary to and punishable under Section 86 of the Criminal Code, Cap 34, Volume II Laws of Osun State.

“You did steal gold jewelries valued at N150,000, one wristwatch valued at N75,000 and cash sum of N96,000, total valued at N321,000, property of one Bunmi Oladimeji and thereby committed an offence contrary to and punishable under Section 390(9) of the Criminal Code, Cap 34, Volume II Laws of Osun State of Nigeria, 2002.”

Oyelakin pleaded not guilty to the allegations.

Chief Magistrate M. A. Olatunji granted him bail in the sum of N300, 000 with two sureties in the same amount.

In a related case, a 20-year-old-man, Dada Taiwo, has been docked before a Chief Magistrate’s Court in Osogbo by the police for allegedly breaking into and entering into a trader’s shop.

Police prosecutor, ASP John Idoko, said that the defendant, on November 20, 2022, stole some copper wires and iron rods valued at N2 million, property of one Muhamuda Yinusa.

Charges brought against him read that “Taiwo Dada, aged 20, on November 20, 2021 at about 8pm at Arikalamu area, Osogbo, did break and enter into the shop of one Alhaji Muhamuda Yinusa and thereby committed an offence contrary to and punishable under Section 413 of the Criminal Code, Cap 34, Volume II Laws of Osun State, 2002.”

“You did steal copper wires, wires and iron rods valued at N2 million, property of Alhaji Muhamuda Yinusa and thereby committed an offence contrary to Section 383(1) and punishable under Section 380(9) of the Criminal Code, Cap 34, Volume II Laws of Osun State.”

However, Dada pleaded not guilty to the charges. His counsel, Tunbosun Oladipupo, urged the court to grant him bail in liberal terms.

Magistrate A. A. Adebayo granted the accused person bail in the sum of N1 million with two sureties in the same amount.

The matters were adjourned till December 9 for mention.
