Policeman shoots motorist at checkpoint in Osun, rushes him to hospital

A motorist, James Ajayi, has been shot by a policeman attached to the patrol team from the Ijebu-Jesa Division of the Osun State Command for allegedly refusing to stop at a checkpoint.

The Point gathered that Ajayi, a commercial driver was stopped by the policemen manning the checkpoint near Odo-Okun in Ijebu-Jesa town of the state but was accused of showing reluctance to stop, and wanting to ram over the policemen on duty.

Angered by this, a policeman opened fire on the driver. But for the quick response from the doctors at the accident and emergency unit of Obafemi Awolowo Teaching Hospital Wesley Guild Ilesa, the commercial driver would have given up the ghost.

The victim was rushed to the hospital by the police who hinged their action on self defence as they alleged that the victim attempted to run over them.

Ajayi was said to have sustained a gunshot injury on his leg and had been hospitalised.

Confirming the incident, the state police Public Relations Officer, Yemisi Opalola said investigation was ongoing to unravel the circumstance surrounding the incident.
