Theft by workers worry Unilever Plc

The management of Unilever Nigeria Plc is in pains due to the worsening spate of pilfering and outright stealing of the company’s products and property.

Only last year, the company suffered multiple financial setback resulting from the unwholesome and fraudulent activities of some of its staff.

Aside from the fire that gutted part of the factory, with repairs gulping millions of Naira, many other ‘psychological setbacks’ were said to have drained the company’s lean purse.

Now, a new generation of thieves are said to have continued to divert multimillion naira finished products from the company’s factory.

The scheme, according to an inside sources, is usually carried out between some gullible contract security personnel and staff of the company Of course, a union activist was caught late last year with an unauthorised consignment of the company’s products in the boot of his car.

The activist was arrested and detained shortly before he was finally given the boot.

Today, the sacked man is a security personnel in another company within the precinct of the company.

Our source disclosed that the latest heist had to do with two trailers loaded with toiletries worth several millions of Naira.

Their modus operandi would be to arrange for drivers to take away undocumented finished products through unauthorised route within the company while the receivers would earnestly wait in town to have them.

“They did some last year and the recent one was earth-shaking. The drivers drove off two trailers and vanished into thin air.

Well, the matter was reported to the police at Agbara and a handful of some suspects were arrested and interrogated. But the truth is that those goods are gone forever”, the source said.

Officers at the Agbara Police Station told our correspondent that the arrested suspects in connection with the latest theft would soon be arraigned in court.

“We caught some of the thieves. They have made confessional statements and we shall take them to court at the conclusion of our investigation”, a police officer, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, confirmed to us.
