Three men docked by police over fraud

The Osun State Police Command has arraigned three men for allegedly defrauding a land buyer of the sum of N600, 000.

The trio, Kazeem Alaga, 40; Sunday Santa, 50; and Afolabi Isiaka, 50; were accused of collecting the said sum from one Joshua Oyeleke with the pretense of selling a piece of land to him, a promise which they failed to fulfill.

According to police prosecutor, Inspector Bose Shoyemi, the defendants committed the act in 2017 at Abidogun area of Osogbo.

The charge against them read that “Kazeem Alagba, Sunday Sanya and Afolabi Isiaka, sometimes in the month of July, 2017 at about 2:30pm at Abidogun area, Osogbo in the Osogbo Magisterial District, did conspire among yourselves to commit felony to wit obtaining money under false pretense and thereby committed an offence contrary to Section 516 of the Criminal Code, Cap 34, Volume II Laws of Osun State of Nigeria 2002.

“You did fraudulently obtain cash sum of N600,000 (Six hundred thousand naira) only from one Oyeleke Joshua with the pretense of selling a plot of land for him and thereby committed an offence contrary to and punishable under Section 419 of the Criminal Code, Cap 34, Volume II Laws of Osun State of Nigeria 2002.

“You did steal cash sum of N600,000 (Six hundred thousand naira) only property of one Oyeleke Joshua and thereby committed an offence contrary to Section 383 (1) and punishable under Section 390 (9) of the Criminal Code, Cap 34, Volume II Laws of Osun State of Nigeria 2002.”

However, they pleaded not guilty to the offences. The defence counsel, Najite Okobe, applied for bail in liberal terms for them, saying that they were presumed innocent until proven contrary.

Magistrate Olusola Aluko granted the trio bail in the sum of N500, 000 with two sureties each in the same amount.
The matter was adjourned till August 18 for mention.
