Two commuters fall into Lagoon in Lagos accident, five die in Ogun road crashes

An accident occurred in Lagos on Wednesday, resulting in two adults being thrown from an 18-seater bus into the Lagos lagoon, causing significant impact.

The Lagos Territorial Coordinator, National Emergency Management Agency, Ibrahim Farinloye, said in a statement in Lagos.

He said that personnel of the Marine Police were in search of the two adults, a male and a female, who fell off the LT 18-seater bus.

Farinloye told the News Agency of Nigeria that the crash involving the bus with registration number FKJ 872 YA occurred by Adeniyi Adele axis inward Lagos Island, on the Third Mainland Bridge.

He said that the driver of the vehicle, who was on speed, swerved off the road and hit the bridge railings.

He said that the impact forcefully pushed the two passengers off the bus into the Lagos lagoon.

“The victims, an adult male and female, are being searched by the Marine Police.

“The injured have been evacuated to a nearby hospital,” Farinloye said.

Three die in Lagos-Ibadan expressway crash

Also, three people lost their lives while two others were injured on Wednesday in a lone crash around Fidiwo Bridge along the Lagos-Ibadan expressway.

The lone crash, which reportedly occurred at about 1:07 pm involved a green Toyota Jeep with number plate BDG 213 BJ and five occupants.

Authorities have determined that the accident was caused by a burst tyre, resulting in the loss of control and subsequent crash under the bridge.

The spokesperson for the Federal Road Safety Corps, Ogun State Sector Command, Florence Okpe, stated this in a statement sent to journalists.

The injured victims were said to have been taken to Victory Hospital, Ogere Remo while the corpses of the dead have been deposited at FOS Morgue, Ipara Remo.

The statement partly read, “FRSC Ogunmakin Unit Command carried out a rescue operation on Lagos-Ibadan expressway around Fidiwo Bridge on a crash that occurred at about 1307hrs.

“The crash involved 01 vehicle with registration number BDG 213 BJ, a Toyota jeep green colour.

“A total of 05 persons were involved (04 male adult and 01 female adult) and 02 got injured while the remaining 03 were killed from the lone crash (02 male adult and 01 female adult)

“The cause of the lone crash was tyre burst speed, which led to loss of control and the vehicle crash under the bridge

“The injured victims were taken to Victory Hospital Ogere, while the corpses were deposited at FOS Morgue, Ipara Remo.”

Meanwhile, the road safety agency has advised motorists to drive within the stipulated speed limit and always go on a routine check to detect any fault on a vehicle.

Drunken driver crashes into bus, kills two in Ogun

In a related incident, a drunken truck driver, on Wednesday, reportedly crashed into a bus around the Castinjo/Ola bus stop along the Ota-Idiroko Expressway in the Ado-Odo/Ota Local Government Area of Ogun State, killing the bus driver and his motor boy on the spot.

The spokesman for the Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency, Babatunde Akinbiyi, disclosed this in a statement sent to journalists.

Akinbiyi said an eyewitness account claimed that the truck driver, who was reportedly drunk and was on top speed, lost control and rammed into the bus coming towards Ota.

The crash, which reportedly occurred around 6.48 am, involved a MAN Diesel truck with no number plate and a bus with number plate LND 224 GF.

The accident was said to have caused a traffic snarl for some hours as the crashed truck obstructed the smooth flow of traffic.

The wreckage of the crash was, however, said to have been cleared from the road and taken to Onipanu Divisional Police Station, while the dead have equally been deposited at Ifo General Hospital.

The statement partly read, “According to an eyewitness account, the MAN Diesel truck with no number plate was driving inbound Idiroko from Ota when the driver, due to drunk driving and excessive speed, lost control and rammed into the bus driving in the opposite direction from Idiroko to Ota.

“The driver of the bus and the motor boy died on the spot due to the impact of the collision while the drunk driver of the truck and its motor boy ran away.

“The accident vehicles (truck and bus) have been evacuated off the road to Onipanu Divisional Police Station, Ota, while the bodies of the dead have been deposited at Ifo General Hospital Morgue.

“While TRACE and the police commiserate with the families of the deceased, motorists are again warned to desist from drunk driving and excessive speed given its attendant consequences.”
