Two young men docked for biting, beating police officers as judge laments increasing assault on cops

Two young men have been dragged before an Osogbo Magistrate’s Court for allegedly assaulting two officers of the Osun State Police Command.

The suspects, Daramola Muritala, aged 22 and Toheeb Bakare, 25, were accused of biting and beating Inspector Alabi Peter and Corporal Aderinto Rauf attached to the Anti-Vice Intelligence Squad of the Nigeria Police.

According to the police prosecutor, Assistant Superintendent of Police, Adegoke Taiwo, on August 17, 2023 in Ikire, the duo severely assaulted the officers and inflicted injuries on them.

“That you Daramola Muritala and Toheeb Bakare, on the same date, time, place, and in the aforementioned Magisterial District, did seriously assault Inspector Alabi Peter and Cpl.

Aderinto Rauf attached to Anti-Vice Intelligence Squad of the Nigeria Police by beating them with your fist blows and biting them with your teeth,” one of the counts read.

Taiwo informed the court that the defendants committed offences contrary to and punishable under Sections 516 and 356 of the Criminal Code cap 34, Vol. II Laws of Osun State of Nigeria 2002.

While entertaining the bail application from the defence counsel, Taiwo Ajibola, Magistrate Adekanmi Adeyeba lamented the worsening rate of attack on security agents, especially police officers by civilians.

Adeyeba urged stakeholders to rise to the situation by warning citizens against the recurring acts.

Thereafter, he granted the accused persons bail in the sum of N200,000 and one surety each in like sum. He said the sureties must be the biological parents or older siblings of the defendants.

He adjourned the matter till September 8.

In a related development, a 45-year-old man, Joseph Pedro, has been arraigned before an Osogbo Magistrate’s Court for allegedly assaulting his fellow man by beating him up and tearing his clothes.

Police prosecutor, Inspector Adeoye Kayode said Pedro and two others, at large, on July 29, 2023 at Old Garage Area, Osogbo, did assault one Bolarinwa Tosin by beating him up and damaging his Spark 4 mobile phone, valued at N55,000; bags, slippers, belt and clothes valued at N25,000. The total value of the complainant’s property was N80,000.

The defendant pleaded not guilty to the allegations.

Magistrate Adebayo Ajala granted the accused person bail in the sum of N100,000 with one surety in the same amount. The matter was adjourned till September 4 for hearing.
