Estate agent faces prosecution for swindling client of N1m

An estate agent, Suleiman Ismail, aged 43, has been dragged before a Chief Magistrate’s Court sitting in Osogbo, Osun State, for allegedly defrauding one of his clients.

The police accused Ismail of collecting the sum of N1 million from one Muraina Taoreed with pretence to sell a piece of land to him.

Police prosecutor, ASP John Idoko, informed the court that the defendant committed the act in April 2016 in Osogbo and had refused to return the client’s money after failing to provide the land for which he allegedly collected the said sum.

The charge pressed against him read that Suleiman Ismail, sometime in April 2016, at about 12pm in Osogbo, Osun State in the Osogbo Magisterial district, did with intent to defraud, obtain the sum of N1,000,000 (One million naira only), from one Muraina Taoreed under the pretence to sell to him a parcel of land at Aganga area, Kobongbogboe, Osogbo, a pretence you know to be false, and thereby committed an offence contrary to and punishable under Section 419 of the Criminal Code, Cap 34, Volume II Laws of Osun State of Nigeria, 2002.

“You (defendant) on the same date, time, place and in the aforementioned Magisterial district, did steal the sum of N1, 000,000 (One million naira) only property of one Muraina Taoreed and thereby committed an offence contrary to Section 383, punishable under Section 390(9) of the Criminal Code, Cap 34, Volume II Laws of Osun State of Nigeria, 2002.

The defendant pleaded not guilty to the allegations without legal representation.

Chief Magistrate, Olusola Aluko, granted the accused person bail in the sum of N250, 000 with two sureties in the same amount.

The case was adjourned till November 24 for hearing.
