Operatives from the Osun State Police Command have raided one of the hideouts of a notorious secret cult group in Osogbo, the state capital.

A suspect, aged 25, identified as Wasiu Omotosho, was said to have been arrested at the hideout during the raid. The suspected cultist was alleged to be in possession of two bags of weed suspected to be Indian hemp.

According to a police source, a team of detectives from the Anti-Cultism Unit of the Command stormed the hideout located at Jolayemi area of Osogbo recently.

It was said that only Wasiu was unlucky while other members of the gang escaped.

Meanwhile, in a motion brought before Magistrate A. O. Daramola by a police officer, Inspector Kayode Adeoye, the police prayed the court for an order to continue to keep the suspect in custody till completion of investigation.

Adeoye informed the court that Wasiu was arrested in connection with conspiracy, membership of unlawful society and unlawful possession of Indian hemp.

He said, “The respondent (Wasiu) was arrested in the case of conspiracy, being a member of unlawful society and (on account of) unlawful possession of weeds suspected to be Indian hemp on 12th May, 2022 at Jolayemi area, Osogbo, Osun State.

“On 12th May 2022, upon information received by the police that some hoodlums were terrorising the residents of Jolayemi area, Osogbo, Osun State, a team of detectives invaded a fraternity hideout at Jolayemi area, Osogbo and the respondent was arrested and found to be in possession of two bags of weeds suspected to be Indian hemp while others took to their heels.

“The respondent is currently assisting the police in the investigation of the case.

“Releasing the respondent arrested on 12th May, 2022 without concluding investigation would hamper proper investigation and I promise to arraign the respondent as soon as investigation is completed.

“The investigating police officer wants further investigation to Ondo and Lagos states to apprehend other fleeing suspects and recover exhibits.

“Except this application is granted, there is no other way to conclude investigation of the case and recover the exhibit.”

The Magistrate ordered that Wasiu should remain in police custody for two weeks to allow for investigation. He asked the police to arraign the suspect after the expiration of the period.
